Over 50 people came along to the first Ashurst & Colbury Big Lunch on 18 July. It was held on the old cricket pitch behind the Happy Cheese in glorious sunshine. The idea of the Big Lunch was started in 2009 by the Eden Project in Cornwall as a way of getting people in local communities to get to know each other. 100’s of similar events took place across the country.

There was a really good mix of people at the Ashurst event – from the young to the not so young and long term residents and those who have recently moved here. Picnics were consumed and many new contacts and friendships started before having an inaugural game of Channel Island cricket (you’ll have to ask someone who was there to explain that) and then home – in my case slightly sunburned!
Kate, the new Parish Priest at Colbury Church told me how much she had enjoyed getting to meet lots of new people and all concerned decided that this should be the first of many Big Lunches in Ashurst and Colbury.
The event was jointly planned by the Ashurst and Colbury Community Group www.accg.hampshire.org.uk and New Forest Transition www.newforesttransition.org
