Diarists Review

We have had 6 diary keepers working hard over the last 5-6 months, trying to eat more local food, and even trying to grow some of their own. They have been supported by a couple of more experienced veggie growers, which has been a great help, thank you guys.

We have now asked the diary keepers to write a short review about their experiences over the summer months and about how the Food Challenge has challenged and even changed them:

Transition Hythe & Dibden

What a topic for my first blog post!

After going to last years Heat Exchange I came away awed by the energy from the room. It was a fantastic experience, being amongst so many like minded people, and I was hoping to get involved in some way. Unfortunately, things happen, and I was out of the loop for a while. Until earlier this year, when I got back in touch with a couple of those I had met at the meeting.

Some news.....

Well time has been flying away with us.....

Last month our fridge freezer broke down and it still isnt fixed. Luckily you dont need a fridge to store veg (but it helps) and it has increased our food waste slightly. It made me think how much we rely on modern technology and a consistant source of power to simplify our lives. Unfortunatly it has meant as we cant store veg for a week we have not been shopping as locally as we would like for some time now as the farm shops are closed when we… Continue

Containerised Veggie Growing

I'm a hoarder by nature, so when some 'community-minded' oaf left a supermarket trolley outside Piglets Corner one morning, rather than chuck it in the skip I wheeled it down to the barn and pondered it's use. Every spring since then I've lined it with an old plastic feedbag (great for moving well rotted manure around), added a thin layer of well-rotted horse manure, then topped it off with a generous layer of multipurpose compost. We've enjoyed fantastic courgettes and lettuces ever since,… Continue

Hale & Redlynch Local Food Fair

What a great turnout! As well as the 40 families who turned up to collect their Local Food Boxes we had so many customers that we ran out of cake and soup! Several producers including Loosehanger Cheeses, Cotton Craft Bakery and the Redlynch WI sold out, and New Forest Meats sent out twice for more stock! Customers and producers both gave us lots of positive feedback from the day, and several people who are already involved in nearby community food… Continue
