Start a Food Coop to access local food

Dear Transition New Forest!

I am working for Sustain - the alliance for food and farming, as a Food Coops Advisor for the South East, helping people to access fresh, local and sustainable food. Your Local Food Challenge sounds like a great project and I hope it is going well. I hope that this email about food coops may help make local food easier for some people - feel free to pass on this information or contact me for more information.

Wordling

While pootling around the WWW I found Wordle. It's a web site that creates word clouds. One way to use it is to point it at a web site and it generates a cloud based on the content of the site. The result is an image that captures in text the feel of the web site. Here's the Food Challenge forum Wordle:

Packeting seeds for the VegEvent

We love Runner Beans and our favourite variety is Wisley Magic, we save lots of seed every year.

This year we have more than ever so that means we have plenty spare for the seed swap at the VegEvent. Thankfully Runner beans are not promiscuous, they tend to self pollinate and so come 'true' from home saved seed, even if you grow other beans in the garden. We leave part of our row of beans unpicked to ensure plenty of pods have time to ripen properly.… Continue

What local produce are you eating at this time of the year?

We're well away from the main growing season so it's more difficult to find local produce now.... But there's still plenty to be had. What are you finding?

How to waste less seeds (or should that be fewer seeds)

It was such a rank day yesterday that Sue and I bit the bullet and had a purge on our assorted boxes of veg and flower seeds. Some of the seeds had sell-by dates going back 5 or 6 years! What a relief to get shot of so many half used, mouse-nibbled, sunlight-faded packs of faded potential - but sad too because we threw out many tens of ££ value and the resource had been wasted.

The main reasons the seeds didn't get sown was the number in each packet and also the short viability of… Continue

What's a Locavore?

"Anyone who seeks out and savours food grown, raised or produced close to home."

Amy Cotler - The Locavore Way.

And when Amy asks, What's Local? She goes on to explain:

"Local can mean picking an apple off the tree in your backyard, going down the road to a farmers' market, or buying food from 50, 100 or 200 miles away. A lot will depend on the availability of products, and that's determined largely by location and season.

Some people say that food from… Continue

Watch out for sneaky Jack Frost

This long spell of cold weather is allowing the frost to sneak into places where it really shouldn't get. Our potatoes were stored in an old animal shed inside wooden and plastic bins covered with hessian sacks and bubble wrap. I say they were stored there because we have now moved them into a cool room in the house. I lifted the lid on one of the bins to get some spuds out and noticed ice crystals on the Swedes at the top of the bin. Alarm bells rang and emergency action was… Continue

Copper tools to appear at the VegEvent 2010

Forgive me but I will be writing about the few, selected retailers who will be supporting the VegEvent 2010. I have carefully selected products that are essential and where possible local. It's a happy fact that to grow-your-own you don't need to spend much, I've tried to focus on the basics like, seeds and tools that you do need.

I'm a sucker for beautifully made hand tools.

I enjoy using garden tools that are well made and well… Continue

Temperature trials for garden cloches, the results are in.

Hello all,

We have recently carried out a study of or PoshCloche garden cloches to see just how effective they are at warming the soil and protecting the plants.

Temperature trials taken throughout December 2009 show that PoshCloche cloches give even greater protection and warmth when the weather is at its coldest.

During the coldest part of the trial period (11th to 17th December 09) it was on average 2.7 ºC warmer under a PoshCloche. Average soil surface… Continue

We like cheese!

I tried the cheese from the Fernhill Cheese Company and went back for more! Soft, creamy and fresh, the children liked it too. Worth stopping at their stall at Lymington Saturday Market just opposite St Thoma's Church.
