Dorset & Forest Farmers' market, Brockenhurst

We called in at the farmers' market at Brockenhurst today. The veg, fruit etc on the Sopley stall all looked wonderful. We found it difficult not to buy at least one of everything! Couldn't resist a Romansco or the coloured carrots even though they weren't on our shopping list. The bread on the Cottage Loaf Bakery stall was tempting too (& we didn't resist that either.) It wasn't very busy when we were there but a large group of donkeys tried to come into the Hall just as we were leaving.…See More

Longdown farm shop

Just thought I'd mention the Longdown Farm shop which sells lots of local and/or Forest Marque food. I've bought Beaulieu strawberries & blueberries, Romsey tomatoes and various "Pig 'n' Pickles" chutneys. Among lots of other products there are fresh free range chicken & duck eggs and meat from the Longdown Farm, cakes from Lymington, Lyburn cheese & goats cheese from Sway. It's open every day 10 - 5 and if you're going from the Forest to Southampton (or vice versa) along the A35…See More

Fairweather's Learning Garden free w/shop

I've been growing vegetables for a few years but with little knowledge or skill and so went to the w/shop today. It was great. I'm motivated now to start sowing a few crops in the next week or so armed with some extra practical knowledge now. There were about 12 people at the session. The gardener demonstrating for us was so good. He gave us loads of practical advice and then this was backed up with some botanical facts. He answered all our questions fully and explained everything so well that…See More

Fairweather's learning garden

Posted on September 6, 2009 at 13:54 5 Comments

I visited the learning garden at Fairweather's gdn centre in Beaulieu on Friday. It was mid winter when I saw it last and since then it has flourished and blossomed - all with one part time gardener and volunteers! It's packed with growing fruit and vegetables and flowers. It's lovely just to walk round but it's inspiring too. If you haven't visited it you should go. It's open every day 10 - 4.

Eat Local Wednesdays

Posted on August 8, 2009 at 18:31 0 Comments

How often can you ask the person who made your cheese about the cows the milk comes from? Or ask the farmer who grew your carrots whether he was using pesticides? Do you know where the steak you order at a restaurant came from?Eating locally reflects our growing discomfort at being disconnected from our food. In a time when school children don’t always know that fish and chicken don’t have ‘fingers’, when we’re being told by supermarkets that the chicken from across the globe is part of a… Continue
