Old ladies bike needed

A bit of a strange request and it's not food orientated but I thought you folks on the food challenge might be able to help.I'm looking for an old bike (ladies preferably)......it can be a bit rough, doesn't need to be rideable. The kind I have in mind would probably be black with a basket on the front and a carrier of some sort on the rear. It's a prop for a photo I have in mind amongst the cow parsley and apple blossom....but time is running out.I have found the kind of thing on ebay but…See More

FoodTalk post by Richard Loader

What am I up to in the garden?

Weekend 5/6th March I've been looking round the garden and getting quite depressed by the Vole population that has developed over the Winter. I had hopes that the cold would have reduced the numbers but I can see Vole holes in every bit of lawn and rough grass, probably 2 or 3 per metre square....that's a lot of Voles over about an acre. That all means we have to grow even more to feed ourselves and the Voles, I think there's a vicious circle going on here. There's no sign that predator…See More

Stripper action

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 17:50 6 Comments

I find this little gadget very effective in stripping corn from the cob, and less messy than doing it with a knife. It also avoids getting those woody bits mixed in with the kernels.

The device is made by OXO, I bought it online, can't remember where from but it was well worth the few ££ that it cost.

The blade is sharp so you need to take care, blood mixed in with the kernels doesn't look…

Harvest VegEvent report

Posted on September 19, 2010 at 10:00 0 Comments

The sun shone and it was a perfect early Autumn day, maybe that's why the attendance was disappointing. What was lacking in numbers was made up for in quality, my lasting impression will be the lovely folks who were there, and that applies to the public, speakers, stallholders and the Transition Fordingbridge group, what a great bunch of characters to spend a pleasurable day with.

Our speakers were excellent, all three made such an effort to give us their…

Locally manufactured garden gear, really?

Posted on September 16, 2010 at 21:08 0 Comments

Well yes, not all garden equipment is made in China. I was surprised to find that a Ringwood company supplies Wormeries made in Hampshire from re-cycled plastic.....and palatial worm accommodation they are too. Wormcity have a great track record for developing wormeries that work.

and, in the New Forest PoshCloche make lovingly finished…

Richard, Hi
Good news about your Fordingbridge Harvest event! Wondered, if you could add it as an event on this website too? Just go to events along the top, and add an event.
You can always go in and update it, as things change etc..
Many thanks
Sarah

Richard, Hi
Not sure if you get a reply automatically by joining the food swaps group, but Debbie Lockey has added a comment, that she could accommodate some potatoes. Thanks

Dear Richard
Thank you very much for volunteering to take part in our Plant a Tree day, in December.
Below is the list of trees that we have available to us, including dessert apples, cooking apples and pears.
The Apples will be a selection of 1 and 2 year, but they will both range from 4-5ft in height. Varieties:
Discovery (Eater)
Katy (Eater)
Fortune (Eater)
Greensleeves (Eater)
Egremont Russet (Eater)
Fiesta (Eater)

Grenadier (Cooker)
Bountiful (Cooker)

The Pears will all be 2 year plants, 4-5ft in height. The 3 best varieties are:
William’s Bon Chretien
Concorde
Conference

If you would like further information on these varieties, I have found a couple of websites, which describe them, although they are not our suppliers:

http://www.orangepippin.com/varietyindex2.aspx and http://www.adamsappletrees.co.uk
and for pears http://www.buckingham-nurseries.co.uk

Please could you leave a comment on my wall, with the variety and number of tree(s) that you would prefer.

We are looking into pick up points for Friday 4th December, and they will include Ringwood, Fordingbridge, Pennington and Brockenhurst, and may be Lyndhurst, Ashurst and/or Hythe.

Many thanks
