All good sensible, healthy debate and you wonder why the NFNPA have not understood all this - but clearly they have not. Until you attempt to set up, establish and run a small business I don't think you have any idea of how hard it is and what dif...

I was very pleased with my summer produce. i still have lettuce in a trough, but I am fed up of eating it so hopefully it won't go on for too much longer. Although I am using the endive in carrot and endive soup, curried soup etc. I threw in some ...

Debby - this sheet muching sounds brilliant - sounds like actually cutting out the having to put everything into the compost bin. We have lots of veg peelings, read a lot of newspapers and the mouse (pet in cage) provides the shavings. I have sort...

Richard, we have just returned from a friends house, where they are lucky to have a tree covered in Mirabelles. We came away with a large bag but sadly won't be making the tart as we ate them all on the way home - most eaten by my fussy daughter E...

I agree. I think we will find that everyone knew we should have planted them earlier. But if my theory of an eagerly observed plant grows better then we will have cabbage for halloween! Although I also find things don't seem to grow that much betw...

I don't suppose I will actually get a crop from any of the above over winter (I probably should have planted well before now for that) but hopefully I should get an early harvest next year. s

I have found some raddish seeds that can still be planted in September. I also have some overwintering onions, carrots and lettue - all seeds. In Scats today, I found some over winter planting red and white onion sets. Garlics too. My broad beans ...

Hi Richard - thanks very much. I'm so glad that you say various things will be arriving in garden centres soon, as Everton Nurseries tell me they won't be getting anything else in now and I was wondering if I had got the wrong end of the stick abo...

Hi Caroline - you will be able to get over wintering Onions very soon at all good garden Centres - these are well worth growing as they give you Onions to use in June when your stored ones will have run out. Garlic from the Isle of Wight garlic fa...

Over-wintering veg

Does anyone have a good source of plants, not seeds, that I can buy to put in my plot. Say, onions, garlic, green stuff or anything else that might survive the winter. I have only ever grown summer crops so have no experience of what to grow through the winter. Everton Nurseries do not have any. There are various on-line sites but am nervous to buy from a source I do not know.

Free seeds

My lettuce are the only ones I have not yet planted as I already had a few of my own in so wanted to stagger my planting. I have sown my courgettes and squash in pots inside and they (all but one of the squash) are about 2inches high. I have also sown the chard, again indoors, and put it out at the weekend. Looking a bit weepy, but hopefully will pick up. I have put my, enormous, runner beans straight into the ground, last weekend, and despite constant very close up observation, have yet any sig… Continue

Locally sourced food

I was doing very well at eating a lot of locally grown veg until Laverstock Park closed. Anyway, I have not switched to another farm shop, just gone back to Waitrose. I have all sorts planted in my garden and always have grown what I could with the space I had. I shall endeavour to grow what I can. What is so wrong with slug pellets? Can anyone tell me please. Thanks.
