Hi Carol. For the last couple of years we have grown potatoes in stacks of tyres. We get the tyres free from the local garage, and the seed potatoes from my Dad. We just plant them in compost in one tyre, then as the leaves come above the tpo of t...

Progress so far from a Food Diarist

Thought I would just generally update you all so far on my progress so far on the Food Challenge. To be honest, I thought the biggest challenge would be grow local, as opposed to buy local - well I was wrong! It's so easy to grow veg, you have to just overcome any obstacles along the way and "learn" for the next time. We have only grown a very small amount of approx 7 types of veg, so I was a little dismayed when I pulled up ALL of my spring onions last week and there was only enough for one mea… Continue

yes last year we grew hundreds of pumpkins by accident. i had thrown out all the seeds from the pumpkins used for hallowean in the compost heap, then used that on the flowerbeds. we have also grown runner beans very successfully. they are better grown in beds rather than pots which i did last year.

oh yes, and I am bringing on some runner beans in mum's greenhouse - they looked very droopy yesterday but she thinks it's too early to plant them out?

Well Paul I have planted tomatoes (as you know). I was intending to go and buy some potatoes and plant them Sunday but, lets just say was unable to for one reason or another. Visited few nurseries Monday and, guess what, they've all sold out. However, my mum (you know, who lives next door) is growing about three pots of them so has said I can take one over ... it was so easy!

Carol, Hi and welcome. I think you our diarist from Paul's office? Is that right? I hope you like our new website, its quite funky isn't it? Certainly a lot more interactive than our other one.
Glad you are on board with the diary. If you need any assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us. We also have a couple of 'buddies' more experience grower and shoppers who are willing to lend a hand and give advice along the way.
Where are you based? Do you live in Lyndhurst too or commute in?

take care, Sarah
