What don't chickens eat?

We have given in and decided there is no point trying to get grass to grow in our chicken run.  However this does leave us with a rather unsightly area right outside our patio doors.  I thought we could just turn it into a bed and grow plants that would give the chickens some shade, whilst leaving them the earth to turn over  and investigate.  Any ideas for some plants that they will leave alone(that won't do them any harm either); useful/edible to humans would be an added bonus? AliSee More

Storing Produce

We have 2 freezers which are currently full to the brim with our excess fruit & veg & our garage is looking rather cluttered with sacks of potatoes, boxes of carrot & beetroot layered in sand, squashes laying about everywhere & trays of onions. Already lost most of our onions when we checked them last weekend & think our garage is probably too warm especially in this milder weather. Has anyone tried to build a small root cellar & if so, how successful has it been?AliSee More

What's for Breakfast?

Posted on May 19, 2009 at 12:52 2 Comments

I'm finding breakfast the hardest thing to source locally. If we have cooked breakfast, say eggs on toast, that's fine - eggs from our chicks & home made bread. If we're in a bit of a rush (quite often), it's back to cereals - I enjoy muesli, but him indoors is a definite weetabix or Shredded Wheat kind of guy. Neither of us tend to drink tea or coffee with breakfast during the week - we both like the "zing" of orange juice to wake us up. Any suggestions on how we can "localise" our… Continue

Local Flour

Posted on May 7, 2009 at 13:26 6 Comments

Does anybody know where we can buy local flour for breadmaking. I make bread every week and normally buy either Wessex flour (from Danestream farm shop) or Leckford flour from Waitrose, but would love something more local if it is available. I believe Eling Tide Mill sell flour, but do they have any outlets apart from having to travel all the way to them from Barton on Sea.

Ali, Hi
Thank you so much for volunteering to plant and look after the apple and pear trees funded by the New Forest Food Challenge. Below are some final details for next week.

You will be picking your tree(s) up from me:

Sarah Fawkes, 5 Lodge Road, Pennington, Lymington, Hants, SO41 8HH 01590 675613 07866 560458

The trees will be available to you to pick up on Friday 4th December. Please could you contact me before you leave to pick up, just to check I am around, as I am doing it from my own home.
The aim is to plant the trees in the hour between 11 am - 12 noon on Saturday 5th December, as part of the BBC Breathing Spaces Record attempt. In order to qualify for the record:

Plant your tree: between these times

Take a photo: Make sure the time and date are set correctly on your digital camera or camera phone. Then get someone to take a photo of you planting your tree or take a before and after shot if you are on your own. Remember; if you are planting more than one tree make sure you get photos of you planting them all.

Email the photo: The BBC will need evidence to prove you have planted the tree so they can verify the record with Guinness. This is their list:

Set the correct time and date on your camera.
The photo must be taken between 11am and 12 noon GMT - we will be checking this information from the photo.
Email us the photo - do not crop or change the photo, because this will change the date and time on the photo.
Email your photo to us at breathingplacestrees@bbc.co.uk, by 12 noon on Friday 11th December 2009.
Tell us what type of tree you have planted and the full postal address of your site, including postcode, so make sure you include this in your email.

Our extra note, for child protection reasons - NO photographs of children doing the planting, may be a welly or a hand, but definately, NO FACES.

Dear Ali
Thank you very much for volunteering to take part in our Plant a Tree day, in December.

The Apples will be a selection of 1 and 2 year, but they will both range from 4-5ft in height. Varieties:
Discovery (Eater)
Katy (Eater)
Fortune (Eater)
Greensleeves (Eater)
Egremont Russet (Eater)
Fiesta (Eater)

Grenadier (Cooker)
Bountiful (Cooker)

The Pears will all be 2 year plants, 4-5ft in height. The 3 best varieties are:
William’s Bon Chretien
Concorde
Conference

If you would like further information on these varieties, I have found a couple of websites, which describe them, although they are not our suppliers:

http://www.orangepippin.com/varietyindex2.aspx and http://www.adamsappletrees.co.uk
and for pears http://www.buckingham-nurseries.co.uk

Please could you leave a comment on my wall, with the variety and number of tree(s) that you would prefer.

We are looking into pick up points for Friday 4th December, and they will include Ringwood, Fordingbridge, Pennington and Brockenhurst, and may be Lyndhurst, Ashurst and/or Hythe.

Many thanks
