Hi Richard. I can't make it on Saturday, but this is something that I feel really strongly about, so would still like to be involved if any actions arise from your get together.

Hi Ali - well, I haven't made a root cellar but I have spent some time investigating root cellars in Newfoundland (Canada) It's surprising just how many root cellars still exist even near the main city - once you get your 'eye in' you can see them...

Hi Ali, Such a shame about your onions, but it may not be warmth thats the problem....the most important thing is that they should be really dry .We dry ours on mesh racks outdoors in dry weather and bring them under cover when the weather turns m...

Interesting to hear about the fruit leathers. We have an Aga & although the slow oven is very gentle, I think it is too warm for leathers as the recipes I have say that they should be about gas mark 1/4. I do use the oven for drying tomatoes & the...

Hi Richard How do you "dehydrate" and "revive" your tomatoes? We tend to just freeze fresh toms, but they are only really good for sauces etc when defrosted.

The Mill at Gordleton has been awarded the New Forest Marque and their website looks good. We haven't eaten there for a couple of years & couldn't get in for our wedding anniversary last Saturday as they had a wedding on

What's for Breakfast?

I'm finding breakfast the hardest thing to source locally. If we have cooked breakfast, say eggs on toast, that's fine - eggs from our chicks & home made bread. If we're in a bit of a rush (quite often), it's back to cereals - I enjoy muesli, but him indoors is a definite weetabix or Shredded Wheat kind of guy. Neither of us tend to drink tea or coffee with breakfast during the week - we both like the "zing" of orange juice to wake us up. Any suggestions on how we can "localise" our breakfas… Continue

Local Flour

Does anybody know where we can buy local flour for breadmaking. I make bread every week and normally buy either Wessex flour (from Danestream farm shop) or Leckford flour from Waitrose, but would love something more local if it is available. I believe Eling Tide Mill sell flour, but do they have any outlets apart from having to travel all the way to them from Barton on Sea.

Dear Ali
Thank you very much for volunteering to take part in our Plant a Tree day, in December.
Below is the list of trees that we have available to us, including dessert apples, cooking apples and pears.
The Apples will be a selection of 1 and 2 year, but they will both range from 4-5ft in height. Varieties:
Discovery (Eater)
Katy (Eater)
Fortune (Eater)
Greensleeves (Eater)
Egremont Russet (Eater)
Fiesta (Eater)

Grenadier (Cooker)
Bountiful (Cooker)

The Pears will all be 2 year plants, 4-5ft in height. The 3 best varieties are:
William’s Bon Chretien
Concorde
Conference

If you would like further information on these varieties, I have found a couple of websites, which describe them, although they are not our suppliers:

http://www.orangepippin.com/varietyindex2.aspx and http://www.adamsappletrees.co.uk
and for pears http://www.buckingham-nurseries.co.uk

Please could you leave a comment on my wall, with the variety and number of tree(s) that you would prefer.

We are looking into pick up points for Friday 4th December, and they will include Ringwood, Fordingbridge, Pennington and Brockenhurst, and may be Lyndhurst, Ashurst and/or Hythe.

Many thanks
